The term “Tory” was often used interchangeably with “Loyalist” during the Revolutionary War to refer to those who remained loyal to the British Crown. Since the early 1700’s, Tory had described anyone that supported the right of the King over Parliament. After the signing of the Declaration it was commonly used to describe American colonists who supported the continuation of British rule over the colonies.
