Thomas Young was born in Laurens, South Carolina on January 17, 1764, although his brother, Christopher, says he was born in February. Sometime around 1765 his family moved a short distance to modern day Union County.

Absalom Bobo was born about 1754 in Albemarle County, Virginia. He was drafted in February or March of 1781 and first mustered at Blackstocks (View Map) in modern day Union County. Absalom served as a private in Captain George Roebuck‘s company of Colonel Benjamin Roebuck‘s battalion of the Spartan Militia.
